The Most Imaginative Inventions The Victorians Used To Change Society

Did you know that plenty of things invented in Victorian times are still used today? It was a society that pushed us into the world we know today, as they were all about making breakthroughs and seeing how far we could push technology. Amazingly, it also means they were behind a host of ideas.

The most imaginative inventions the Victorians used to change society haven’t all stood the test of time. Still, they were often enough to help shape the world into the one we know and love today. In fact, many things that society relies on today wouldn’t be here without them.

Victorians never created the anti-garotting cravat

Jack the Ripper is a name that’s lived down in history. The Victorian criminal led police on one of the biggest cold cases that still haunts the world today, as they never did learn about the person behind the infamous name. The fact he was seemingly untouchable is one of the reasons that so many people were worried about losing their lives to the criminal, which is how the anti-garotting cravat was born. Although it was never made, the idea that Jack was terrorizing society was enough to see it become an idea, at the very least. The idea was to wear a spiked cravat under your collar. Then, if someone tried to sneak up behind someone and end their lives, they would be in for a nasty surprise.

A toilet mask wasn’t entirely what it sounds

When hearing the words “toilet mask,” it can be easy to think of something worn in Victorian times to avoid odors or germs from using the bathroom. While it’s something that could be kept there, these masks had a very different use. In fact, they’re something that is still used in society today, as toilet masks were just like sheet masks that were used in the hopes of clearing women’s skin overnight.

Things have come a long way since we had to write everything by hand. It turns out that Victorians were behind the things that changed society, but they didn’t always look the way we know them now. That’s because, before the typewriter, there was the Hansen writing ball. It was first designed in 1865 and launched in 1870. Like typewriters, the idea was to push keys down onto a piece of paper to form words, but the difference was the keys were arranged in a hemisphere above the paper. A lot of thought went into the design, as Rasmus Malling-Hansen performed several tests to figure out the best placement to get the fastest typing speed.

Victorian express engines changed railroad travel

It’s no secret that the Victorians were behind a lot of the steam travel we still use today. In fact, the invention of the steam train is something that changed society, and it was all thanks to Matthew Kirtley. That’s because he was the one behind the Victorian express engine that launched in 1878, years after railroad travel was first launched. By 1854, every major town across England had a train station, with the express engine meaning people could get from A to B faster than ever before.
