Unsolved Hollywood Deaths That Remain Unsolved Until This Day
If there is one thing that many of us struggle to do, it’s say goodbye to our favorite celebrity. However, that gets even tougher when their passing doesn’t seem to make any sense – and there are no answers when it comes to what really happened.
If there is one thing many of us have learned, it’s that even the top celebrities of Hollywood won’t last forever, even if their legacies are still going all these years later. Sadly not everything is always as it seems when it comes to high-profile Hollywood passings. After all, Hollywood has long been shrouded in mystery. Why should that be any different when it comes to learning the truth about why someone is gone?
Tupac Shakur passed away following the second attack to take his life
Tupac Shakur has long been one of the biggest names in the music industry. It didn’t matter whether you were into rap or not; there was a time when Tupac was just about everywhere we looked – and many couldn’t get enough. Tragically, that all came to an end in September 1996, when the rapper was just 25 years old.
Someone pulled up next to Tupac’s car, rapidly fired several bullets, and fled the scene. In the end, the rapper was hit four times, and although he didn’t lose his life at the scene, he passed away six days later. Apparently, this wasn’t the first time someone had tried to take Tupac’s life, but no one was ever arrested or charged in either case.
No one ever learned why Ronni Chasen lost her life while driving home
While she wasn’t one of the front-and-center stars, Ronni Chasen earned a tremendous amount of respect due to her time as a Hollywood publicist. She was heading home from an after-party on November 16, 2010, when someone started shooting into Ronni’s car. Little is known about what really happened. All they know is the car likely forced Ronni to turn off the road before she crashed her car and ultimately lost her life.
In the end, Ronni was struck four times. The twist? No casings or weapons were ever recovered. Plus, the shots were so precise that investigators believe Ronni had to be targeted by an expert shooter. Ex-convict Harold Smith was later charged, but most don’t believe he was involved or know why Ronni lost her life.
David Carradine was initially believed to have taken his own life, but this was later challenged
One of the strangest high-profile passings came when actor David Carradine lost his life. He was 72 years old and staying in Bangkok to work on his new movie when 72-year-old David was found passed in his hotel room. He was hanging in the room’s closet, leading investigators to believe David took his own life.
To add to the matter, two of David’s former wives later confessed that David had some hidden secrets from the bedroom that could have contributed to the actor losing his life. However, things weren’t that simple. His widow later sued the production company behind David’s final movie for not helping the actor when he needed it. Plus, a private autopsy later ruled out the possibility that David took his own life.
Someone went to extreme lengths to take Georgette Bauerdorf’s life in 1944
Socialite and budding dancer and singer Georgette Bauerdorf had only been living in Los Angeles for two months when she was discovered face down in the bathtub. Neighbors had heard screams throughout the night but put it down to a couple arguing. It wasn’t until the police entered the apartment the following day they learned Georgette’s life had been taken.
She was covered in various injuries, such as a rag in her mouth and bruising across her body. Still, it was lying face down in a running bath that confused detectives. The investigation showed someone had gone to extreme lengths to attack the youngster, including tampering with her lights and even found fingerprints. Sadly, no suspects were ever linked to the evidence, even though they interviewed over 100 people.
Princess Diana’s passing has long been blamed on the Royal Family
On paper, it seems as though everything was solved when it came to Princess Diana’s tragic passing – or is it? We know that the princess was traveling through a tunnel in France when the car hit a pillar and three out of four passengers ultimately lost their lives. However, there have been plenty of theories about what really happened.
Several people believe the Royal Family had something to do with Diana’s passing as they were worried she was too outspoken and controversial since leaving Prince Charles. This was backed up by a letter where Diana wrote about her fears that someone was planning to take her life by tampering with her car. However, there has never been hard evidence to link the Royals to Diana’s passing.
Elizabeth Short is still better known as The Black Dahlia all these years later
The name Elizabeth Short might not ring any bells to start, but what about The Black Dahlia? She has inspired so many stories in Hollywood since her tragic and brutal attack on January 15, 1947. Elizabeth was just 22 years old and trying to make a name for herself in Los Angeles. Tragically, someone ultimately took Elizabeth’s life – and no one has ever been charged.
She was found cut in half in Leimert Park. She had no blood left in her body, no clothes, and had apparently been washed by the person who ended her life. To make matters even worse, the person had mutilated Elizabeth’s face to create what’s known as the Glasgow Smile. Tragically, Elizabeth is now better known for her passing than her minor movie roles.
Christa Helm’s passing has never been solved despite recent DNA evidence
It seemed as though everything was in Christa Helm’s favor before someone took her life. The youngster was just 27 years old, but she already had a modeling and acting career under her belt by 1977. However, Christa was also a prominent name in the gossip columns, as she was linked to several high-profile celebrities in her day. Tragically, someone took Christa’s life outside of her agent’s home in a horrific crime.
That was just the beginning. It’s said the star kept detailed diaries of all her relationships with other celebrities that just so happened to go missing before investigators found them. Years later, DNA evidence showed female DNA under Christa’s fingernails which might have linked her to a female singer she was allegedly romantically with before her passing.
The taking of JonBenét Ramsey’s life has gripped America for a quarter of a century
One of the biggest crimes of the century took place in 1996. Just eight hours after beauty pageant star JonBenét Ramsey was reported missing, investigators found her body in the family’s basement. It was a grisly scene and one that posed plenty of questions. Her parents claimed they were being blackmailed for $118,000 for their daughter.
For many years, the world blamed JonBenét’s parents, but DNA evidence later cleared them both of the crime. Instead, it’s believed that an unknown male – who isn’t related to the family – was behind it all. Despite the tremendous amount of media coverage and DNA links, no one has ever officially been charged with taking JonBenét’s life. However, John Mark Karr claims he knows who committed the crime, but this was later disproved.
David Bacon may have posed for the person who took his life before he passed away
In 1943, David Bacon had just finished his biggest acting role in the film serial ‘The Masked Marvel.’ Tragically, on September 13, David drove his car off the road and stumbled out in a swimsuit before he collapsed and passed away. Investigators eventually found a small knife wound in his back. The biggest piece of evidence they had was a camera in David’s car, which contained a photo of the actor smiling on the beach.
They believed this was taken by the person who committed the crime, especially as witnesses saw David driving with an unidentified male earlier in the day. David’s widow always maintained that he was in the LGBTQ community and was dating Howard Hughes. However, no links were ever made, and no one was charged.
Michael Jackson’s passing has been solved, but people still question the details
It felt as though the world stood still on June 25, 2009, as we learned that Michael Jackson had lost his life. In the end, a post-mortem revealed that the King of Pop lost his life due to a cardiac arrest. However, this was no natural tragedy; it was triggered by a combination of medication that had been prescribed by Michael’s doctor.
Before his passing, Michael was planning one final world tour and seemed to be in fairly good health. Just one month later, the Los Angeles County Coroner ruled the passing as a deliberate act, with physician Conrad Murray being charged with involuntary taking someone’s life in February 2010. Many still question how a licensed doctor accidentally prescribed the doses he gave the pop star.
Tammy Lynn Leppert’s disappearance has never been solved, even though there are plenty of rumors
For years, Tammy Lunn Leppert performed as a beauty pageant star and model before moving to acting. She managed to land a few roles before something strange happened. In 1982, Tammy was at a party where she started showing paranoid, violent, and erratic behavior. This was all before working on the gangster classic ‘Scarface,’ where Tammy suddenly broke down over the sight of fake blood.
Although she checked into a mental health facility, 18-year-old Tammy soon left and was last seen heading off to Cocoa Beach. Initially, the police believed she ran away. However, one theory states that Tammy unknowingly became one of the many victims of Christopher Wilder, who stalked Florida and took various models’ lives during the time Tammy disappeared.
No one could understand why Prince suddenly passed away in 2016
Being such a huge name in music meant millions mourned the news that Prince was gone on April 21, 2016. To start, the police ruled it as an accident. Still, fans wanted to know why the musician was found unresponsive in an elevator. A post-mortem revealed that an accidental overdose was to blame. There was one answer, but it simply caused more questions.
Those close to Prince claim that he never used narcotics and didn’t want to suddenly start exploring that side of life. So how did he get them, and why was Prince taking them? Did he even know what he was doing? These are just some of the questions that need answers and is why the DEA has kept the case open all these years later.
Bobbi Kristina Brown tragically met the same fate as her famous mother
The passing of Whitney Houston shook the world in 2012. However, what made people stop and think more than anything was when her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, met the same fate just three years later. Just like her late mother, Bobbi was found unconscious in a bathtub and was immediately rushed to the hospital.
Here, she remained in a coma for almost six months before the 22-year-old passed away. Sadly, this meant the world never learned what happened to Bobbi. All we know is that Bobbi had taken various substances before she slipped underwater. Did she want to meet the same fate as her mom, or was there more to the story? Although the family initially blamed Bobbi’s boyfriend, no one has ever been charged.
Phil Hartman lost his life at the hands of his wife after an argument about her narcotics use
Being a part of the sketch show, ‘Saturday Night Live’ instantly made Phil Hartman a household name. Tragically, his passing is now what many people remember him for more than his work. Phil was sleeping in his home following an argument with his wife, Brynn Omdahl, when she crept into the room on May 28, 1988.
Here, Brynn shot her husband three times before driving to a friend’s house and confessing to the crime. She ultimately locked herself in a room at her home and took her own life before the police could intervene. Although it seems to be a straightforward case, there have been plenty of lawsuits and allegations since they lost their lives as Brynn was discovered to be using narcotics at the time.
Jill Dando helped catch criminals for years before she was a part of her own crime
For many years, the British public fell in love with TV star and journalist Jill Dando, thanks to her time on the show ‘Crimewatch.’ Here, she was in charge of helping to catch criminals across the country. Little did Jill know that she would soon become a part of an unsolved crime and lose her life in the process.
Jill was shot outside her home, where she ultimately lost her life. All we know is a man was behind the weapon, but that’s where things go cold. Initially, Barry George was charged with the crime but was later acquitted seven years later when his lawyers argued his IQ was too low. Several theories believe Jill was targeted by a gang of criminals she was about to expose.
Someone took Johnny Stompanato’s life, but no one ever figured out who
Being a mobster meant few people were surprised when Johnny Stompanato was found passed in 1958. Although we know who took his life, we have never learned who was behind the crime. Actress Lana Turner and her 14-year-old daughter Cheryl Crane have always been the prime suspect. Reports claim that Johnny was abusive to Lana, and she took his life.
However, rumors state they planned on Cheryl taking the blame to save her mom’s career and avoid prison time. In the end, Lana was brought to trial but was later found innocent on the grounds of self-defense. Still, even several members of the jury admitted they believed Cheryl was actually behind the attack. To date, Cheryl is the only surviving witness and has never spoken of the crime.
William Desmond Taylor’s passing sparked a disturbing era in Hollywood
We have to go back to 1922 to uncover the story of someone taking William Desmond Taylor’s life. He was a prominent silent movie actor and director of the time, working on more than 80 movies in a few short years. On February 2, William was found passed in his home. Someone who said they were a doctor at the scene entered and declared a stomach hemorrhage caused William to lose his life.
However, when investigators arrived, they realized he had been shot at least once. The alleged doctor was never seen again. Several people were accused of the crime, including William’s former valets, who forged checks and wore flashy clothes, but no one was charged. Even Paramount Pictures was accused of covering up the crime.
No one knows if River Phoenix regularly used narcotics or not
River Phoenix made a substantial mark on Hollywood throughout the 1990s, as the young actor appeared in a host of movies and won many people’s hearts. That was until he met his end at 23 years old. River was friends with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, many of whom were involved in the illegal substance scene.
His passing was ultimately ruled as a combination of narcotics. However, the confusing part comes when trying to figure out if River was a regular user or not. Some say the actor never touched the stuff his entire life and questioned why he would suddenly start. Others stated River relied on illegal substances every day. Some even claim a mutual friend deliberately gave River too much to end his life.
Four members of The Wonderland Gang lost their lives, but no one was ever found guilty of it all
The Wonderland Gang ruled the illegal substances scene in Los Angeles in the ‘70s and ‘80s. That was until three gang members and an associate all lost their lives in a brutal attack. Just three days before, they posed as police officers to rob local narcotics legend, Eddie Nash, making off with $1.2 million – $3.4 million today – worth of narcotics and items.
However, The Wonderland Gang met their end. On July 1, 1981, neighbors discovered Ron Launius, Billy DeVerell, Joy Miller, and Barbara Richardson had all been beaten. Amazingly, Susan Launius survived but has no memory of it all. Adult movie star John Holmes was initially charged with the crimes as he was found at the scene and involved in the initial robbery but was later acquitted.
Marilyn Monroe was linked to two famous faces shortly before she was found to have passed
For many years, Marilyn Monroe was hailed as one of the greatest names in Hollywood. To date, she is still considered to be one of the biggest cultural icons of all time, making her passing all that more painful. The star lost her life at 36 years old on August 5, 1962. However, the details surrounding it all are a little murky.
On the surface, it seems that Marilyn took her own life. That was until theorists dug a little deeper and linked Marilyn to Robert and JFK Kennedy. Now, several people believe the brothers or a government agency either ended her life or forced Marilyn to take her own life. The CIA still has the case files, but it’s unlikely the world will ever know the truth.
Bob Crane losing his life revealed a lot of secrets about the actor
Bob Crane was a huge name in the ’60s, thanks to his sitcom ‘Hogan’s Heroes.’ Tragically, that all came to an end in 1978 when the actor was found after a savage attack in his apartment. It wasn’t until he passed that the world learned the truth about Bob’s lifestyle. For years, he had been close friends with John Carpenter.
Apparently, the two enjoyed wooing women and filming their adventures together – often without the women’s knowledge. Sadly, the police department wasn’t equipped to deal with Bob’s case. In the end, they matched blood from Bob to John’s car, but this wasn’t enough to convict the star. John was eventually taken to trial in 1990 when photos showed brain matter in the car, too, but he was found not guilty.
To date, no one knows why Jimi Hendrix took so much medication before bed
When thinking about legendary musicians, there’s a good chance Jimi Hendrix comes to mind. After all, his name is still one of the most famous of all time. That was until he was found to have passed away at just 27 years old on September 18, 1970. A post-mortem quickly gave an answer, as Jimi had choked in his sleep after taking a mixture of drink and narcotics.
Jimi’s girlfriend at the time confirmed that he had taken a huge number of her tablets the night before. However, many fans weren’t convinced by it all. After all, Jimi had massively exceeded the recommended dose for the medication. That’s left many people wondering if it was an accident, Jimi took his life, or someone forced him to take it all?
The Notorious B.I.G. lost his life six months after Tupac Shakur in an eerily similar crime
For years, the Notorious B.I.G. was accused of trying to take rival musician Tupac Shakur’s life two years before he passed, although he was never found guilty of the crime. In a strange twist of fate, the rapper, whose real name is Christopher Wallace, was also the target of a drive-by crime while driving in Los Angeles just six months after Tupac passed away.
Of course, it didn’t take long for fans to connect the dots and assume the two crimes were linked, especially as no one has ever been linked to or charged in either of them. B.I.G’s mother, children, and widow later filed a $400 million lawsuit against the LAPD as they claimed that corrupt police were the real ones behind it all.
Bobby Fuller was found in strange circumstances in his car outside his home
Things were on the up for 23-year-old Bobby Fuller as the youngster continued to climb his way up the music ladder. That was until July 18, 1966, when a strange crime scene left police wondering what really went down. Bobby was found in his car parked outside his home. The twist? He was covered in gasoline.
The post-mortem later revealed that a combination of the gas and summer heat caused petechial hemorrhages across Bobby’s side. The examiner marked it as an accident and that Bobby took his own life but left question marks next to those boxes. To date, several people believe that someone ended Bobby’s life, with some claiming it could be Charles Manson or a link to the mob.
Natalie Wood’s disappeared in the middle of the ocean before she was found in the water
Everything about Natalie Wood losing her life has left people wondering what really happened on the yacht. The movie star was boating with Robert Wagner, her husband, in November 1981, when Robert reported her missing. Several hours later, Natalie was discovered floating face down in the water wearing nothing but her pajamas, a jacket, and socks.
At first, investigators ruled it was an accident. However, several bruises on Natalie’s body have raised plenty of red flags. The yacht’s skipper and the star’s sister appeared on the ‘Dr. Phil Show’ in 2018 to accuse Robert of taking Natalie’s life. While there seems to be a lot of circumstantial evidence, there has never been an arrest or any charges brought against Robert or anyone else.
Virginia Rappe claimed that Roscoe Arbuckle was the one to end her life
Back in 1921, Virginia Rappe was a silent movie star. Sadly, this was the same year the star lost her life after an out-of-control party at the St. Francis Hotel. There was plenty of drinking involved, even though it was prohibited at the time. It’s said that Virginia was in a room with Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, who was also a major star of the time.
However, guests were confused when they heard screams from the room. Guests report they found Virginia “writhing in pain.” To make matters even more confusing, Virginia claimed, “He did this to me” before she passed away three days later. Arbuckle was tried three times, twice to the result of a hung jury and the third finding him innocent.
The story of Kurt Cobain taking his own life has been debated for years
One of the highest-profile passings that gripped the world is none other than Kurt Cobain. The musician was the frontman of Nirvana but made it no secret that he didn’t want to be famous. Kurt checked into several mental health facilities and even attempted to take his own life before he ultimately passed in April 1994.
In fact, Kurt had been at a rehab center before he scaled the walls and headed home a few days before his passing. For years, it was ruled that Kurt took his own life. However, several people claim there is no way the musician could use the weapon supposedly involved and that someone forged the note he left behind or forced Kurt to write it before they took his life.
Bruce Lee was just 32 years old when he lost his life
For many years, Bruce Lee was the most famous name when it came to martial arts stars who became actors. Arguably, he is still the most famous of his kind. That’s one of the reasons that fans were so upset to learn that he was gone at just 32 years old. It’s said that Bruce had been suffering from seizures and headaches that saw him end up in the hospital.
On July 20, 1973, Bruce took some medication before taking a nap – and never woke up. The doctors later said it was a passing “by misadventure” as Bruce had an allergic reaction to the medication. However, others still believe there was a lot more to the night Bruce Lee lost his life.
Brandon Lee was filming a movie, and his passing was caught on camera
As if things couldn’t get worse for the Lee family, Brandon Lee eventually lost his life 20 years after his father. However, there was something about Brandon’s passing that didn’t sit right with many. The actor was busy working on a movie named ‘The Crow’ when he was supposed to be shot with a fake gun. The reality? Brandon was somehow shot with a real weapon.
The entire thing was caught on camera as they were in the middle of the film at the time. It wasn’t until Brandon didn’t get up that people realized something was wrong. The investigation claimed that the prop gun hadn’t been loaded correctly, but many don’t buy that story as they believe it was a deliberate act by someone with an issue.
Thelma Todd had received threats to her life before she was found passed away in her car
In 1935, the police had a hard time determining what happened to actress Thelma Todd. The actress was found in her car, and it was determined that carbon monoxide poisoning ended her life. There were just a few problems: her car wasn’t running, and bruises made it seem that someone had forced a pipe into her mouth.
There were plenty of suspects, including gangster Lucky Luciano, her lover, and Thelma’s ex-husband. The LA Times even reported that Thelma had received plenty of notes that said she had to hand over $10,000 or lose her life. In the end, a grand jury could never decide which of the accused parties was responsible or if it was all an accident, meaning no one was charged with taking Thelma’s life.
Everything about finding Gary DeVore has creeped out several people
Everything about Gary DeVore’s passing is unexplained. The screenwriter had plenty of Hollywood connections and had just finished work on his latest project, ‘The Big Steal.’ The film promised to tell the unknown secrets behind why the US invaded Panama when Gary suddenly went missing. The star wasn’t found for a year until officials discovered his car and remains below a bridge in California.
Things got even stranger when they realized Gary was missing both of his hands. When they found what they thought were the missing parts, officials learned they were actually 200-year-old hands. To date, no one has ever been able to answer who took Gary, how he ended up in the water, or where his hands went.
Heath Ledger was discovered by his masseuse who called Mary-Kate Olsen
To many, Heath Ledger will always be one of the most prominent stars of all time. The actor had just finished work on his latest role as The Joker in the superhero movie ‘The Dark Knight’ when the world learned he lost his life. Drawings and clues showed investigators that Heath was completely engulfed by the role. Was this the reason he ended up losing his life?
The actor wasn’t found until a masseuse arrived at his hotel room and couldn’t wake him up for his session. It was only then that anyone called for help – but only after the masseuse called Mary-Kate Olsen. A post-mortem ultimately revealed that a mixture of medication was the reason Heath lost his life, but not everyone was convinced.
No one ever learned what happened to Heath Ledger in his hotel room
It turns out that Mary-Kate’s number was on speed dial on Heath’s phone, but why? That’s what people don’t understand. The masseuse called the star three times before calling 911 and once after help arrived. Apparently, Mary-Kate said that she would call a private security firm in the city, but they arrived after the EMTs.
In the end, everyone cooperated with the investigation, but it still left questions. Rumors have since emerged that Mary-Kate and Heath Ledger were dating for three months before he lost his life. As for his passing, no one still knows what happened. Some claim that it was an accidental overdose. In contrast, others believe that Heath took his own life following a break-up with his fiancée.
Brittany Murphy’s passing was apparently completely avoidable if she sought medical help
Brittany Murphy was just 32 years old when she lost her life in December 2009. The actress was at her home when she was found. A post-mortem later revealed that a combination of medication, being anemic, and pneumonia ultimately ended her life. However, they also added that Brittany would still be alive if she had just seen a doctor.
That’s where things get complicated. Some sources claim that her husband, Simon Monjack, refused to get Brittany help and that he was taking care of her just fine in their home. Just five months later, Simon was found by Brittany’s mom in the same room her daughter lost her life. He also lost his life to anemia and pneumonia at 40 years old.
Brittany Murphy’s mom has since been accused of taking her daughter’s life
For many months, people believed that Simon Monjack was behind Brittany Murphy losing her life. However, if that were the case, then he would have had to take his own life five months later – and that’s the bit that got people wondering. Brittany was discovered to have a dangerous level of heavy metals in her system when she passed.
It wasn’t until photoshoots of Simon and Brittany’s mom, Sharon, as well as several bizarre interviews with the latter, appeared that people started to look elsewhere. Now, several people theorize that Sharon was behind it all. Some claim that both of them were in on taking Brittany’s life – perhaps because they were really in love? – and Simon had to go so Sharon could cover her tracks.
